Poseidon


is a low power laser system with CO2 sealed-off RF laser sources. It is designed for engraving applications such as rubber stamp, acrylic and wooden souvenirs and for cutting thin materials like for embroidery and converting of textile and paper.

World's Largest Digging Machine Is Huge

The world's largest digger is a giant trencher built a couple years ago by German manufacturer Krupp. It took more than 5 years and $100 million to design and manufacture.

The machine is almost 95 meters (311 ft) high and 215 meters (705 ft) long which is just like almost 2.5 football fields in length with 45,500 tons in weight. Maximum digging speed is 10 meters (32 ft) per minute and it can move more than 76,000 cubic meters (~2,700,000 cubic ft) of coal, rock, and earth per day.

Wow, pretty impressive. You get two of these things working around the clock for a couple days and I could finally bury my girlfriend. Haha! No, but seriously honey, go to the gym.

German machinery exec doesn't expect sharp upswing

CHICAGO (Aug. 6, 11:20 a.m. ET) — German-made plastics machinery was booming in 2007 at the K show in Düsseldorf. Equipment makers reported some shortages of key components. What a difference a year-and-a-half makes, a German machinery authority said at NPE2009.

Germany’s machinery business stayed strong up until the fourth quarter of 2008, said Thorsten Kühmann, managing director of the Plastics and Rubber Machinery Association within VDMA, the German engineering federation. Then the bottom dropped out.

“Things moved very fast after that. A turn to the worst,” Kühmann said in an interview during NPE2009 in Chicago in June.

Even so, 2008 turned out to be the best year ever for German plastics and rubber equipment makers, he said.

But Germany, a country highly dependent on exports, quickly began to feel the impact of the global economic downturn. “We expect for this year, we will have a really sharp decline in the first quarter of 2009. It’s a drop in incoming orders of almost 50 percent compared with the first quarter of 2008,” Kühmann said.

He said VDMA expects German plastics machinery to drop about 40 percent for all of 2009, from 2008 levels, measured in euro value.

Plastics machinery is an important part of the German economy. “The whole machinery sector in Germany is affected very, very strongly by the world economic crisis,” Kühmann said. “I’m sure the whole branch will recover again whenever the whole economic situation worldwide becomes better again. We are still at a very low level. We don‘t presume that it’s going to drop from that level, but we don’t see a really sharp upswing now.”

VDMA is based in Frankfurt, Germany.

The recession has prompted several trade associations representing processors, resin makers and machinery manufacturers to create a German Plastics Industry Federation. The federation includes VDMA’s Plastics and Rubber Machinery Association, PlasticsEurope Deutschland and the German Plastics Converters Association.

The federation issued a position paper on June 18, calling on the German government to make the country more attractive for investments, by cutting bureaucracy and regulations and boosting tax incentives for research and development.

“We are in a really difficult time right now in the plastics industry and we feel that at certain points, it’s really important to pull together and to speak with one tongue,” Kühmann said.

Development of an industrial femtosecond laser micromachining system

Within the research project FEMTO, supported by the European Commission, a compact diode-pumped titanium:sapphire laser has been developed which matches the requirements of industrial systems, like compact dimensions and stable laser operation. To achieve this, the laser has been specially designed to be integrated directly into the machining system. For best process speed combined with optimal cutting quality, focus has been laid upon high repetition rates at moderate pulse energies. Typical average output powers are around 1.5W and repetition rates of up to 5 kHz. Accompanying to the laser development, a micro-machining system has been designed to meet the requirements of femtosecond laser micro-machining. In parallel to the machine development, machining processes have been investigated and optimized for different applications. The machining of delicate medical implants has been demonstrated as well as the machining system for general micro-machining of sensitive and delicate materials has been proven. Therefore, the developed machine offers the potential to boost the use of femtosecond lasers in industrial operation.

Femtosecond technology

Femto second regime offers great advantages over the nanosecond and picosecond regime in their ability to deposit energy into a material in a very short time period, before thermal diffusion can occur. As a result - heat affected zone can be reduced significantly. Smaller feature sizes, greater spatial resolution, and better aspect ratios can hence be achieved.

High speed

High power (up to 6 W) Yb:KGW (1030 nm) femto second laser system with variable pulse repetition rate from 1 to 350 kHz synchronised with galvanometer scanners offers significant advantages in high speed micro fabrication.

Submicron resolution

High resolution object positioning system (XYZ Aerotech linear stages) synchronized with laser beam positioning system (galvanometer scanners) and pulse picker gives full control in space, time and energy domains, allowing to fabricate difficult objects with submicron resolution.


Machine vision

Machine vision system composed of high resolution Matrox camera with MIL (Matrox imaging Library) and synchronized with Aerotech linear stages gives vision for whole system allowing to get position, shape or any feature of the object and give this information to the system.


Scanner Control Application

Scanner Control Application (SCA) - original software for controlling the laser micro fabrication incorporates all integrated hardware devices into a single software application. Different device integration is burden away from the end user, no G-Code programming required, which makes simple user interface resulting in powerful, intuitive system that is easy to use. WYSIWYG - What You See Is What You Get is helpful and useful function when there is need to program more difficult tasks. SCA software supports HPGL - standard printer control language for almost all plotters.

Laserod Specializes in Precision Laser Micromachining


We specialize in high resolution, high precision, small spot size, laser beam machining for medical, semiconductor, display, and microelectronics applications. Patterning Transparent Conductive Oxides (TCO) such as Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) is an application of great interest to us. We work with both crystalline and polycrystalline silicon, such as resizing silicon wafers, drilling microvia holes, scribing solar cells, isolation scribes and channels.

We laser process: displays, solar cells, resistors and sensors (transducers).

We perform precision micromachining on all microelectronic substrates such as ceramic, silicon, diamond, BeO and all others.
